COTTON CANDY MOMENT
2025 · Oil on canvas · 36 × 36 inThis painting focuses on a small ritual of childhood — holding an oversized cloud of cotton candy at a fair. I was interested in the contrast between the simplicity of the moment and the emotional weight such memories can acquire over time. The work is part of my exploration of everyday experiences that once felt completely ordinary but later become symbols of childhood itself.
BEFORE WE GREW UP
2026 · Oil on canvas · 36 × 36 inTwo girls run through freshly washed sheets hanging in the backyard, turning an ordinary household scene into a game. I wanted to capture that particular kind of childhood freedom when almost anything around you could become part of play. The wind, moving fabric, and flying hair give the scene its energy, while the simple domestic setting connects it to the everyday life at the center of my American Childhood series.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Childhood Across Time and PlaceMy ongoing project explores childhood across different countries and periods of time. At its core is a simple idea: every adult was once a child, and many of the emotions, places, objects, and seemingly insignificant moments from those years remain with us long after childhood itself has passed.Through figurative scenes, I want to bring the viewer back to that feeling — the freedom of play, excitement over something small, curiosity, friendship, summer afternoons, family outings, and the ordinary moments that only become meaningful in retrospect.Each part of the project is rooted in a particular country and era. I research the clothing, games, interiors, objects, traditions, and everyday life of the period, then use those details to construct believable scenes rather than reproduce specific memories.The surroundings may change from one place and generation to another, but the project is ultimately about something shared: the experience of having once been a child.Current chapter: American Childhood, 1950s–1970s.
PROCESS
Each painting begins with research. I spend time studying the period I am working with — from clothing, toys, cars, and interiors to everyday activities and small details that help define a particular time and place.From there, I develop the scene and composition, thinking about the characters, their gestures, the setting, light, and atmosphere. During the painting process, these elements continue to evolve until the scene feels complete.Research helps me make each world believable, while painting allows me to focus on what matters most to me — the emotion of the moment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Viktoriia Melnik, working under the name NamelessTory, is a figurative painter based in Florida. She works primarily in oil on canvas, creating narrative paintings centered on childhood, memory, and everyday life.Children are the main figures in her work, often shown in moments of play, discovery, or ordinary daily experience. Through composition, light, gesture, and carefully chosen details, Melnik creates scenes that feel like fragments of a larger story.She is currently working on American Childhood, a series exploring childhood in the United States during the 1950s–1970s. The series forms part of her larger ongoing project about childhood across different countries and periods of time. Through these works, she explores how familiar objects, everyday experiences, and small moments can bring back emotions and memories that remain with us into adulthood.
